Gold coin found in Salvation Army kettle in Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) - Someone secretly dropped a gold South African Krugerrand worth more than $1,600 into a Salvation Army kettle in Kokomo, marking the fourth straight year such a coin was found in a kettle in the central Indiana city.

The Kokomo Tribune reports the anonymous donor dropped the coin and six 1-ounce silver coins worth about $32 each into a kettle outside a store. Salvation Army Capt. Dale Brandenburg said the organization would not disclose the location of where the coins were found. But he said each year the Krugerrands have been found in different locations.

Brandenburg says such donations occur all over the country.

He says the find in Kokomo is especially welcome this year because donations have been down and the organization has had a hard time finding volunteers.
