Frankfort woman climbs Mt. Kilimanjaro

FRANKFORT, Ind. (WLFI) - A Frankfort woman has fulfilled her goal, to climb Africa's highest mountain.

According to her husband, Susan Kaspar made it to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro early Sunday morning, Indiana time. She had been climbing the mountain with a group of 46 other women since Wednesday.

Kaspar previously told NewsChannel 18 she hoped the climb would raise awareness for women and children enslaved by human trafficking.

Her husband, Russ Kaspar, shared an audio recording with us, of a phone call from Susan when she reached the summit.

"It's a glorious day. We're doing great," Susan Kaspar said in the recording. "I mean, it's been very, very difficult, but it really has been symbolic of all those that suffer and have no voice."

Russ Kaspar said Susan and her colleagues had to descend the mountain through some rain, and got a much-deserved rest at a lower elevation. Susan Kaspar said some of the women in the group only made it two-thirds of the way up the mountain.
