HAMMOND, Ind. (WLFI) - The former West Lafayette youth minister and the former White County hospital CEO previously charged with mail fraud in Wyoming now face federal charges in Indiana.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Michael Plake, 47, of Lafayette and former Monticello resident Paul Cardwell, 46, now face additional charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud.

Back in March, Plake, the former youth minister at the Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center, and Cardwell, the former head of White County Memorial Hospital, faced 15 federal charges stemming from a fraudulent billing scheme to recover almost $850,000 from the Wyoming healthcare business where Cardwell served as CEO.

In September, Plake pleaded guilty to two of the 15 charges, fraud and laundering. That same month, Cardwell became a federal fugitive.

IU Health officials told News 18 in March they would be doing an investigation of their own after the Wyoming- based charges were filed. Officials could not comment Thursday on the status of their investigation.
