LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A former Lafayette city employee will remain terminated after Wednesday’s Board of Works hearing.

Former laborer Philip Guernsey filed an appeal after he was fired for misuse of sick days.

A representative from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) testified Guernsey suffered from several medical issues after an on the job injury in the 1980s.

The city attorney claimed a pattern of absences that included Mondays and days following holidays led to a special investigation.

The Board of Works voted to uphold the termination.

“This is as far as we can take it right now so, we'll just try to learn from this and move forward,” IBEW spokesman Jim Ogden said.

City leaders declined comment because the case is a personnel matter.

Guernsey declined to go on camera, but family members say they're unsure of what they will do next.
