Former Borders locations readies for new tenants

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A prime retail space may be getting close to being filled after sitting empty for more than a year.

West Lafayette officials said the developer at Wabash Landing is dividing the former Borders location into seven spaces that smaller vendors can fill.

The space has sat empty since the bookseller closed its doors in April 2011.

News 18 reported back in December of 2011 that dividing the Borders for multiple retailers was a possibility.

West Lafayette Director of Development Chandler Poole believes that have multiple smaller tenants who are successful can compensate for the Landing losing a larger one.

"We're happy to see that the lights came on, that there's action being taken by the ownership to be more creative in releasing the space rather than just holding it vacant for a 20,000 square foot user," Poole said. "They are trying to be creative and break it up and get more retailers in it, so we're very pleased to see that happen."

Construction work is underway to divide the space.

It's not known when it could open up for business.
