Food pantry helps hungry Tippecanoe County residents

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - 10,000 pounds of food was distributed on Saturday to help low income residents in Tippecanoe County.

More than 30 volunteers distributed food on a first-come, first-serve basis at Congress Street Methodist Church in Lafayette. More than 280 people received food at today's event.

The pantry opened at 11 Saturday morning, and ran out of food just a few hours later.

Food Finder's Program Coordinator Kristine Jansen said events like the one on Saturday are needed now more than ever.

"Just over the last couple of years, the need has just grown," said Jansen. "The problem is a lot of food pantries are having difficulties filling their shelves and with the increase need. They're just getting hit again and again so we have the mobile pantry."

The Inter-Religious Network and Congress Street provided a hot breakfast for people waiting in line at the food pantry.
