INDIANA (WLFI) - According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Indiana has a widespread flu outbreak.
The CDC says flu activity is now widespread in most of the country.
The flu season has started earlier than it has in a decade, with two dozen states now reporting high numbers.
The Indiana Department of Health is reporting a 6-percent increase in cases during the last week of 2012.
In Tippecanoe County, Public Health Nurse Donella Carter said getting a flu shot is the best way to fight the virus.
"I just think it's going to be on the upswing. This is just the time of year. January and February is the time. That means if you haven't had the flu vaccine, you really need to contact you health care provider and get that done," Carter said.
Carter said if you do get the flu, simply staying home from work or school would drastically decrease the spread of the virus.
