Five arrested for PU strong arm robberies

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Five people have been arrested in connection with three strong arm robberies on Purdue's campus, which occurred about four days apart.

Purdue Police said on three separate days in late October, a total of five people were attacked and robbed from behind while walking on campus.

According to police, 18-year-old Walter Jones faces preliminary charges of robbery with bodily injury, and three counts of theft.

18-year-old Marqesse Estrada faces preliminary charges of robbery with bodily injury, and two counts of theft.

Police said 18-year-old Jalin Cortez Gordon faces preliminary charges of conspiracy to commit robbery.

17-year-old Claude Moore faces preliminary charges of robbery with bodily injury, and two counts of theft.

Police said 19-year-old Kayla Lee faces a preliminary charge of theft.

Purdue Police Chief John Cox said surveillance footage on Purdue's campus helped investigators. Cox said 188 surveillance cameras are scattered throughout campus. He said cameras were installed around 2006, and cost the University up to $2 million.

Cox said the surveillance footage did help, but full credit goes out to all local police. He also wants to remind citizens to stay safe on the streets.

"It's an awareness," said Cox. "The community is safe, nobody needs to be alarmed, and we don't need to start getting overly concerned, 'Oh my gosh, I need to turn around every 10 steps and see who's following me.' Just be aware. Just be aware of what your surroundings are."

Cox said it appears all five people arrested were friends and acted together. He said two more people have been interviewed, and more arrests could be made.
