Man carried from burning home in Clarks Hill

CLARKS HILL, Ind. (WLFI) - A town marshal and a neighbor carry out an elderly man from a burning home Friday.

It all happened on the 9700 block of White Street in Clarks Hill shortly before 3:00 p.m.

A passerby noticed smoke coming from the back of the home and called 911.

When Clarks Hill Town Marshal Brady Sorrells arrived, he and another person carried out the elderly owner inside who was asleep on the couch.

"I feel fortunate, very fortunate," Sorrells said.  "These things can turn out in different circumstances, we're just glad that everybody is okay.  The property can be replaced, but the lives can't."

The fire moved got into the roof and attic area so firefighters had to tear off parts of the roof and use a chainsaw to make sure all the flames were put out.

"We couldn't get to the flames, because of the multiple layers of ceiling," Randy Keller, Clarks Hill Assistant Fire Chief, said.  "With the temperatures and the smoke, the fire and the flames, it's hard on everybody."

Firefighters believe the fire started around the electric meter but the official cause is under investigation.

No one was injured.  But with the heat, firefighters had to take some breaks and cool down with help from neighbors who brought in cool, wet towels.
