LOGANSPORT, Ind. (WLFI) - Firefighters are not sure what caused a fire to spark that destroyed a vacant warehouse in downtown Logansport Thursday.

They got the call about 4:15 p.m.  Hours later, smoke was still visible, rising from the sky in the 200 block of N. 6th St.

Assistant Fire Chief Rick Beir said they hit the smoke as soon as they opened up their garage door nearby.

"We arrived on scene and we had some flames showing, heavy, heavy smoke," Beir said. "It was a two-story, brick building and everything was boarded up, so it was holding all the heat and smoke inside. It wasn't five minutes that we had been here that we had one wall collapse."

Firefighters kept a defensive attack on the building knowing that it was vacant. They said they kept flames from spreading to nearby storefronts, but the collapse did damage one nearby business.

Firefighters said they had the fire under control in about an hour but were still on scene after 10 p.m.

Because of the extent of the damage, it will take investigators some time to determine what caused the fire.
