BROOKSTON, Ind. (WLFI) - Fire destroys a century-old barn in White County Wednesday.

Firefighters received the call just before 5:00 Wednesday evening on the 9300 block of Springboro Road, northeast of Brookston.

The homeowner was not home when the 911 call was made, but family friends at the residence made the call.

Firefighters say the structure was so old it was decided to let it progress.

Because of the drought-like conditions, sparks briefly caught fields nearby on fire, but they were quickly contained.

"Once the fire started and got fully involved," Prairie Township Volunteer Fireman Ryan Altman said. "The fields behind it caught and carried fairly quickly do to the dry conditions we're currently experiencing."

Nobody was hurt in the fire and firefighters still have not released a cause.

A reminder, Tippecanoe County remains under a voluntary burn ban. A voluntary ban means citations won't be given for burning, but extra precautions should be taken.
