WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The West Lafayette Fire Department and the Purdue University Fire Department have issued a ban on the use of fireworks effective June 26, 2012.
This ban will coincide with the current burn ban and will remain effective until such time as the burn ban is lifted or through June 29, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.
State law allows the use of fireworks between 5:00 p.m. and two hours after sunset on June 29 and 30 as well as July 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Fireworks are permitted for an extended period of time on July 4 – from 10:00 a.m. to midnight.
For West Lafayette residents, violations of open burning may result in a $250 fine per incident.
Local officials discourage the use of fireworks, particularly those which leave the ground, considering the increased occurrence of grass and field fires due to the dry conditions.
Until otherwise directed, the public should be advised to attend public displays of fireworks conducted by trained professionals.
