Elementary students and staff fill baskets with Thanksgiving food for families in the community

BENTON CO., Indiana (WLFI) - Prairie Crossing Elementary students and teachers have brought in more than 1500 food items for baskets that will be filled with Thanksgiving foods.

Faculty and staff have raised more than $450 to buy hams for the baskets.

Prairie Crossing Elementary principal Kelly Laffoon said the idea for the baskets came after seeing a need in the community.  Laffoon said the baskets will go to students and their families as well as people in the community.

She says in addition to support from staff, students have helped make Thanksgiving possible for many families.

"The students they have also been so supportive and excited about helping in the community and that's what we want to instill in our students, the use of life skills," Laffoon said.

"I think it's very important because there are unfortunately people that are less fortunate than some of us and it's important that you need to help them," Prairie Crossing Elementary student Adam Hood said.

The baskets will be delivered to the families November 21.
