LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette fire officials are investigating a fire that killed two people early Sunday morning.
Fire inspector Pat Grimes said firefighters were called to a home in Lafayette around 12:30 a.m.
This house at 1810 Morton Street was engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Neighbors said several people were inside the house at the time of the fire. Inspector Grimes said two people were unable to get out of the house and were killed. Shannon Payne, who lives across the street, said she could see the flames inside the house and called 911.
"The neighbors helped break down the fence to get some of the people out and somebody else came running from the other side of the house and she was just screaming that her dad was in there," said Payne.
Neighbor Russell Clifton said the flames were very large.
"Smoke was just bellowing from when I first saw the fire it was coming from the front porch where all that trash was. The flames were just intense . It was very very hot a major fire," said Clifton.
No further information is currently available, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
