WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A drunken driver leads police on a chase through parts of Lafayette and West Lafayette, before crashing his car.

Deputies said they received a call Saturday night of a reckless driver on Veterans Memorial Parkway. A witness told deputies that the driver ran multiple red lights.

A West Lafayette Police Officer was able to locate the car, but when he tried to initiate a traffic stop, the driver wouldn't stop.

Officers were able to lay stop sticks down on North River Road to pop the driver's tire. Once stopped, the driver of the car, 36-year-old Kakuru Makuru of Lafayette, refused to get out of the car.

Deputies said they had to break the window to get Makuru out, and eventually, had to use a stun gun on him and release the K-9 unit on him.

Makuru was treated at an area hospital for a dog bite and was later taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail. Deputies said they do believe alcohol was a factor, and say Makuru could be facing preliminary charges of Operating While Intoxicated, Wreckless Driving and Fleeing in a Vehicle.
