FRANKFORT, Ind. (WLFI) - A new four-way stop sign in Frankfort should serve to help drivers remember to yield to crossing guards and children.
The newly constructed stop on North Maish Road at the entrance to Frankfort Middle School is all part of the newly renovated road project.
Frankfort Police Chief Troy bacon says concerns have been raised by the school crossing guard that drivers are not stopping at the intersection.
“Motorists who fail to adhere to the stop sign and to stop for students and the crossing guard are breaking the law and placing students and the guard at risk,” Bacon said. “Drivers must pay close attention at all times, especially when approaching intersections and when children are present.
“Communication and enforcement is the answer. We are drawing motorists’ attention to the change at that intersection, while increasing police presence to help reduce some of the violations happening and the concern expressed by the crossing guard.
“The improvements made on North Maish Road have resulted in a more accessible, safer and appealing piece of infrastructure in the community and to the revitalization of that neighborhood. All of the changes made are for the better. However, we all need to work together to help ensure the safety of those on foot and those behind the wheel,” Bacon said.
According to Street Superintendent George Belmore, extra temporary stop signs have been placed in this intersection by Street Department crews to increase visibility and awareness of the need to stop for approaching motorists.
“Because the new stop sign is indeed a change, the temporary additional signs should help drivers get used to the need to now stop at this location. Safety is our top priority,” Belmore said.
Disregarding a school crossing guard directing traffic and disregarding a stop sign are Class C infractions, punishable up to a $500 fine.
