Dog owner speaks out after dog is attacked and killed

MONON, Ind. (WLFI) - An area dog is attacked and killed by a neighbor's dog and it's all caught on home surveillance video.

"I'm just scared it will happen to their other dog and I fear for children," Shannon Scheffee of Monon said.

Scheffee said her family's dog was attacked and killed by a dog that lives two doors down. Because the dog wasn't taken away she fears it will attack again and she's not the only one.

"I'm afraid. I'm afraid for my grandkids," Scheffee's neighbor Dianna Tribbet said.

Both Tribbet and Scheffee said the owners of the dog that Scheffee said killed her toy poodle Ariel have other dogs running around town. Tribbet said one of the dogs killed two cats owned by another neighbor, but this is the first time another dog was killed.

"So it was an animal. Next it could be a child and I don't want it to be mine," Tribbet said.

A White County Animal Control officer responded to the call last week after Scheffee called it in but Tribbet said she hasn't let her grandchildren play outside since.

Deputies said because the dog was back on its owners' property they said there wasn't much they could do. 

The concerned neighbors said that's not good enough.

"I think they should be forced to do something permanent like a fence," Tribbet said. "Not these collars, they aren't working. They've had citations in the past for it and it's just not working."

"If the dogs were in a secure environment then they would be able to let her be in her own yard and be able to run and play and not have to be harnessed all the time." Scheffee said.

White County Sheriff's Department told News 18 they've turned the case over to the White County's Prosecutor's office. 

Monon Town Marshall Rodger Young said the surveillance video will be used as evidence.

Meanwhile, Tribbet said she's not letting the matter go. She went to Tuesday night's Monon town meeting and said she will keep going until something is done.

"Obviously the things in the past that they've been trying to do is not working. My concern is, these people need to step up and take some kind of action that will protect the community," Tribbet said.

"I just want justice for Ariel," Scheffee said.

The owners of the dogs refused an interview with News 18.
