DELPHI, Ind. (WLFI) - Things are getting back to normal at Delphi High School - that's what the school's superintendent is saying.

The school made headlines last week after substitute nurse Leah Abbott was arrested for an alleged sexual liason with a 17-year-old student.

Delphi Community School Corporation Superintendent Ralph Walker said the school and its counselors have taken the necessary steps to help answer questions and calm fears.

"Our two counselors have done an outstanding job: visiting with the students, discussing the pertinent issues, and taking care of the student needs," said Walker.

Walker said he realizes there are still a lot of unreleased details in this case.

"It's such a delicate situation, and, of course, I do not think at this point there are many facts that are known about the situation or the allegations that have been made," said Walker.

This uncertainty has made the situation tougher to deal with, but Walker said he was proud of how students were reacting.

"So, at this point the student body is handling everything very professionally. I'm proud of them," said Walker.

Walker said many parents and students want to know what took place at the school itself. Walker said the answer to that is "Nothing."

Walker said none of the alleged acts are said to have taken place on school property. He said Abbott only subbed a total of three times during the school year, all during first semester.

"She has not even been in our high school building for three months. Nor are there any allegations or any evidence of anything improperly taking place on school property or in the nurse's station," said Walker.

Walker said the corporation won't change any procedures when it comes to future hires. He said the staff will continue to make sure the students walking down these halls feel safe and secure.

Substitute nurse Leah Abbott will be in court March 18. The 34-year-old has been charged with 5 counts of Class D felony child seduction.
