Delivery driver robbed at gunpoint in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - After making a delivery Tuesday night a sandwich delivery driver was robbed at gunpoint in the 1200 block of Heath Street in Lafayette.

Police said the driver was walking to his car, which the robber was hiding behind. The driver wasn't hurt, and police said the robber got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

Lafayette Police Sgt. Jay Rosen said delivery drivers usually don't run into these problems while on the job.

"Not in this town, I mean, it happens every now and then but it's not a common occurrence," Sgt. Rosen said.

Von's Dough Shack delivery driver Anthony Fennell said he's never heard of another driver having trouble either.

"I guess it happens, but it doesn't usually happen. I wouldn't think this is a normal thing that happens at all," Fennell said.

Fennell said in the past three years he's been delivering food for Von's Dough Shack he's never had any problems, but said that doesn't mean he doesn't take extra precautions to stay safe.

"I feel fine, I just make sure to lock my car whenever I'm leaving it, don't leave it on so that no one can get in there and keeping my windows up," Fennell said.

Von's Dough Shack has a "no cash" policy after midnight. Fennell said it's mostly so drivers aren't held responsible if a customer doesn't pay and for another important reason.

"I mean, for safety as well. No late-night robberies with cash or anything," Fennell said.

Sgt. Rosen said whether you are a delivery driver or not you should always be aware of your surroundings late at night.

"Know what's going on when you leave the vehicle, know what people are around the area, and just be vigilant and just, when you come back to your car, make sure nobody is around and always have your cell phone in hand," Sgt. Rosen said.

The LPD is still investigating the robbery and hasn't released the name of the restaurant the driver worked for.

Police are still searching for the person responsible for the robbery. The person is described as a black male in his 20s, about six feet tall, with a thin build.
