Crews rest up, ready salt for long night of snow and ice

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Local street department crews are continuing to rest up for Tuesday’s anticipated storm.

Several staff members from the West Lafayette Street Department were sent home early Tuesday so they can come back in the afternoon to treat roads.

Once the department gets word of ice, it sends out the first salt trucks.

Crews will maintain the roadways all evening and into Wednesday morning’s commute.

Officials ask drivers to take their time on the roads and park off the street if possible.

“If we get anywhere above 3 inches of snow, we plow snow,” West Lafayette Street Commissioner Dave Downey said. “We push it to the curb line. It needs some place to go. So, if cars are there it isn't going to reach the curb.”

The season's below average snowfall leaves the department with plenty of salt for the roads.
