Could Purdue Senate endorse guns on campus?

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue student government could soon consider a resolution to endorse legislation allowing guns on campus.

While state senators consider a bill that would allow anyone with a concealed carry license to carry their gun at any state university, two Purdue student senators are working on a resolution to endorse it.

Currently, Purdue policy prohibits anyone from carrying a gun or explosives on campus. If caught, a student can be expelled.

One of the authors to the resolution, student senator Nick McBride, said he hopes to bring it before the full student senate for their consideration in two weeks.

"I definitely think our support as the student senate makes a difference as far as the legislators decisions," said McBride. "I think that if we can show as a representative voice of the student body that we support the legislation. I feel like that would give it a big push."

As News 18 already reported last month, Purdue Police Chief John Cox is against the bill under consideration.

In November 2011, a Purdue student senator proposed allowing students to carry guns on campus to the student senate, but it was denied.

McBride hopes his resolution will be considered at the Senate meeting Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
