TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Consumer fireworks are banned in Tippecanoe County.
On Thursday, Tippecanoe County Commissioners issued a Declaration of Emergency Ban on Open Fires Including Fireworks.
The declaration says "Tippecanoe County continues to be an emergency fire hazard area and that open burning and the discarding of matches, ashes, or any burning materials from a vehicle or otherwise are prohibited" until further notice.
The declaration specifically exempts permitted, public displays of fireworks by "municipalities, fair associations, amusement parks, and/or other organizations" as defined by state law.
However, the commissioners give the Tippecanoe County Emergency Management Agency authority under County Code to extend the ban to include public fireworks displays, if drought or other weather conditions make them unreasonably dangerous.
