NEW RICHMOND, Ind. (WLFI) - A community rallied together Wednesday night to save its post office. New Richmond residents made their voices heard at a meeting in Montgomery County.
The United States Postal Service is conducting a study that could mean closing down smaller post offices. One of the post offices on the chopping block is in New Richmond.
The public got the chance to discuss the future of the post office with postal officials. Residents said closing down the facility could be a death sentence to the town.
“This office? It's productive. Our postmaster services the community. She takes care of our mail needs at all levels. I don't think it's being mismanaged locally, but I think they've used some money they shouldn't outside the local community and we're paying for it,” said New Richmond resident Sean Gwynn.
But postal officials said service is not going anywhere, the USPS just has to look at different ways to operate.
“I think we're going to be here. The Post Master General has guaranteed that we're going to be here for a long time. We just need to make some organizational structures. We need to do things a little bit differently and we're going to be here to stay,” said Post Office Operating Manager Jeff Leffler.
Leffler said no determination has been made about the fate of the post office. If it is decided to shut it down, customers and the community will have a chance to appeal.
