LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Columbian Park Zoo is now accepting applications for this year’s Junior Zookeeper Program.
Available to teens between the ages of 14 and 17, the JZK program gives the opportunity to get a hands-on look at the zoo-keeping profession.
Training sessions will be held Saturdays throughout the months of April and May.
Junior Zookeepers will be required to volunteer 8 hours a week from June 3 to Aug. 9. Some of the tasks they’ll perform include enclosure cleaning, grooming, feeding, exercising and observing some of the zoo’s animal residents.
They will also help zookeepers with various projects around the zoo, including educational programs and interacting with zoo patrons during normal business hours.
You can apply in-person at the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Administration Office (1915 Scott St. in Lafayette) or online at the zoo’s website.
The deadline for submitting an application is 5 p.m. on Feb. 28 and participation is limited. Those interested in applying must be able to attend a mandatory group interview on either March 2 or 3 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
For any more information you can call Junior Zookeeper Coordinator Courtney Nave at 765-807-1543 or Education Coordinator Amber Frederick at 765-807-1546.
