LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - If you're a fan of river otters and other zoo creatures, Sunday was your last chance to see them in Lafayette until next Spring.

The Columbian Park Zoo has closed its doors for the season on Sunday. In the off season, workers will make sure warm weather animals are kept in a temperature-controlled environment.

They'll also work with the animals to get them more active and sociable. Workers said despite the heat this summer, their attendance was very good and they believe the zoo's long history keep families coming back.

"We're 104 years old," said Assistant Education Coordinator Courtney Nave. "People grew up with the zoo. They remember things like Monkey Island, the elephant, the aviary. They have their favorite things. They're now coming back with their children and grandchildren. And it's not only still here, it's getting bigger and better."

The zoo will reopen from Oct. 24 through the 26 for the annual "Boo at the Zoo" event. The event will take place from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. on those nights. The zoo will reopen for the Summer 2013 season in mid April.
