College Goal Sunday helps students reach their goals for cheap

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Finding a roommate and registering for classes is stressful enough for first-year college students.

The last thing they need to be worried about is financial aid. Thanks to College Goal Sunday, students won't have to stress.

"College Goal Sunday is a free program for students who plan on going to college in the fall, to get some assistance in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA," said College Goal Sunday Media Coordinator David Reseigh.

The event started 24 years ago, and since, it's been helping students save big money on college expenses.

Reseigh said the process only takes about 30 minutes, but the information collected in that short amount of time, can save students some big time cash.

"The school that the student intends to go to will use the information to determine what types of financial aid they're going to be eligible for, whether it's federal or state of Indiana or institutional aid in the form of scholarships or grants," said Reseigh.

Reseigh said financial aid professionals are always on hand to help both students, and parents, make sure they're finding the best options available.

Last year, about 250 students took advantage of the free opportunity, and Reseigh said when they left, they all did so with a sigh of relief.

"Usually, it's kind of a sense of relief that they're done with the process," said Reseigh. "Knowing I think that they've helped their student file something that might help them in terms of giving them financial aid for college is often a relief."

College Goal Sunday 2013 will take place on Sunday, February 24 in Ivy Hall on the Ivy Tech Campus. Doors will open at 2 p.m. and the event is free.
