Co. commissioner says he was unaware of forfeited position

CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Carroll County Commissioner Ron Slavens said he found out on News 18 Tuesday night that county officials had forfeited his position without his consent.

Council Attorney Abigail Diener says in a special meeting Tuesday, the County Council declared the office of Commissioner for District 1, formerly held by Slavens, as vacant because of a residency issue.

Diener says according to Indiana code, if a commissioner no longer lives in his or her district, then he or she forfeits the office. She says the council was informed the Republican Central Committee had conducted an investigation and that Slavens had forfeited his office.

But when the story ran on News 18 at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Slavens contacted News 18 and says he went to the county council meeting Tuesday morning and thought the meeting had been postponed. He says the declaration was made without his knowledge and no one from the county informed him of the decision afterwards.
