Clarks Hill receives a $490,000 grant

Clarks Hill, Ind. (WLFI) - 'Tis the season for giving but one local town will be getting a new fire house.

Clarks Hill was approved for $490,000 to build a new fire station through a Community Focus Fund.

Fire officials said this new addition will improve their old ways of responding to emergencies.

"The fire department was organized back in 1915 and the fire house has been up for as long as I can remember," said town board president of Clarks Hill John Barton.

But Barton said with the old age of the fire house comes some major problems.

"The fire department is just too small for the trucks. When we pull out, we have to pull clear out into the road just to get out of the fire station," Barton said.

Barton said, right now, because of the limited space, they also have to store some equipment outside. But he said with a new, larger fire house, they'll be able to get their job done in a safer and more efficient manner.

"When you have a run at midnight or one o'clock in the morning and everyone is half asleep, it's really important to get out of the department safely before you get out onto the road," Barton said.

Barton said they'll receive the money from the state in early February and plan to start taking bids to build the new building sometime in March.
