Car crash occurs in front of hospital

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A crash occurring right outside of Franciscan St. Elizabeth East hospital Sunday afternoon, sends one person to the hospital with head and internal injuries.

Lafayette police said the accident occurred around 10:15 Sunday morning. Police said 37-year-old Matthew Heart of Lafayette was driving his truck north on Creasy Lane, just past Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital.

At that time, a neon driven by 50-year-old Raymond Southworth of Romney, was trying to pull out of the hospital to go south on Creasy Lane. Police said Heart's truck T-boned the neon.

Southworth was taken to Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital with head and internal injuries.

Lafayette Sergeant Bob Baumgartner said Heart was also taken to the hospital for a blood alcohol test.

"One of the things that we do is to do a blood alcohol test on the individual driver," said Baumgartner. "State law requires that it be done. He was taken to the hospital and we are waiting on the results of that, but we don't suspect that alcohol was involved in this accident."

Southworth's condition remains unknown. South Creasy Lane was closed from Amelia Ave to St Francis way for more than two hours Sunday.
