Candlelight vigil remembers drunken driving victims

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) held a candlelight vigil Tuesday night to remember those killed by drunken drivers.

Police officers, along with families who have been affected by a drunken driver, gathered at Riehle Plaza in Lafayette to remember friends and loved ones who were either killed or injured by an intoxicated driver.  A few families shared remarks and showed a slide show of pictures of victims, along with lighting candles.

Dan Towery, the president of the West Central Indiana Chapter, said that the message of not drinking and driving is especially important during the holiday season.

"It's important 365 days, but especially at this time," Towery said. "People want to celebrate, and we're all for celebrating, but be responsible when you're celebrating."

Matt Devine, a member of the Tippecanoe County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, said officers have arrested about 235 intoxicated drivers this year, roughly the same amount as last year. He hopes in future years, fewer arrests will be needed.
