Candidates square off over gay marriage, right-to-work

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Political opponents with competing visions square off, competing for votes just two months and one day from November's general election.

Eight candidates in four statehouse races laid out their ideas Wednesday evening.

More than 100 voters heard the politicians speak on a diverse range of topics. 

They tackled everything from education and taxes, to the right-to-work law and a constitutional amendment to make marriage strictly between a man and a woman.
    
Candidates for State Representative in Districts 13, 26 and 27, and State Senate District 7, were on stage at the Morton Community Center in West Lafayette.

It was sponsored by the Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association and the League of Women Voters.  NewsChannel 18's Jeff Smith served as moderator.

Sharon Negele (R) and Mark Straw (D) are vying for State Representative in District 13. 

Incumbent State Rep. Randy Truitt (R) is being challenged by Rick Cornstuble (D) in District 26. 

Incumbent State Rep. Sheila Klinker (D) is being challenged by Chuck Hockema (R) in District 27. 

Incumbent State Senator Brandt Hershman (R) is being challenged by Brad Thompson (D) in District 7.

Election Day is Tuesday Nov. 6.
