TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - The burn ban that prohibits consumer fireworks from being used has been extended by the Tippecanoe County Commissioners.
The commissioners voted unanimously Monday morning to extend the burn ban as it relates to consumer fireworks.
State law says that between June 29 and July 9 consumer fireworks may be used, regardless of burn ban. However, Tippecanoe County has passed an ordinance that, due to the severeness of the drought, the use of fireworks during that time is prohibited.
Tippecanoe County Emergency Management Director Smokey Anderson, along with several fire officials, urged the commissioners to extend the burn ban.
"They don't really have control over them, the bottle rockets and fireworks," Anderson said. "They don't know where they are going to go. If they land on someone else's property and it's very dry, it could start a fire and no one would be aware of it for some time."
According to Anderson, all public displays are still scheduled to happen and he urges the public to attend those events.
