LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue University students honored Dr. King's memory by participating in the Day of Service.

Members of the Boiler Volunteer Network, or BVN, volunteered their time at Food Finders Food Bank in Lafayette Monday morning.

Amy Gaulke of Food Finders says about 180 volunteers will be at the food bank throughout the day.

"It's a pretty special time and we have a lot of people that come out and get involved. We love getting our volunteers out here," said Gaulke.

"We rely so heavily on our volunteers so its really great for us to have this many people here today," Gaulke said.

"Since it's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, it's a good day to help out the community like he did and just help out people," said Rebecce Baker, Purdue freshman.

"Today is a special day to be volunteering because today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Purdue University wanted a way to give back," said Alex Krueger, also a Purdue freshman.

"You can see several different people, different races want a way to collaborate and work together as a team and just give back to the community the same way that Martin Luther King did," said Krueger.

Gaulke believes the BVN sent more than 60 volunteers today.
