LAFAYETTE, Ind. - College students make up 30 percent of blood donation in Indiana.

With Purdue students being gone,  local blood centers are running low.

WLFI and the Indiana Blood Center hosted a blood drive to help make up the shortage.

The IBC's Christina Crane said they need  600 units a day statewide to meet demands of more than 60 Indiana hospitals and the need is ongoing.

Indiana University  Health Arnett's Cancer Services Director Doctor Wael Harb said giving blood sets a good example for others.

"There is a big need.  Especially during the summer, because our inventory is down.  And I cannot ask people to do it if I don't do it myself," says Harb.

The blood center's goal for the drive is 125 units before the end of the day.
