Ban on K-2, Spice moves through Senate

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLFI) - A proposed ban on marijuana-like products moved through the State Senate Thursday.

Senate lawmakers voted unanimously to approve a bill that would ban selling and using K-2 and Spice in the state.

The bill was authored by Republican State Senator Ron Alting. He said current state law bans drugs that are designed to have similar effects as illegal drugs, but a loophole exempts drugs labeled "not for human consumption". That is how Spice and K-2 are labeled. They are sold as herbal incense.

Lafayette, West Lafayette and Tippecanoe County have already banned selling or using them.

"It's very important for us to get this off the shelves as soon as we can," Alting said. "It's ten times stronger than marijuana. The bill mirrors that of the marijuana guidelines in the state of Indiana."

The bill now goes before the House for consideration
