Astronaut launches new book, makes donation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A Purdue alumnus returned to West Lafayette to talk about his journeys in space, while also making a big donation to Purdue University.

More than 100 people came out Thursday evening to hear astronaut Jerry Ross promoting his new autobiography "Spacewalker"

Ross has donated papers and memorabilia chronicling his life and career at NASA. Ross is one of 23 astronauts who have graduated from Purdue. With seven spaceflights, he's the most-launched astronaut in history and has spent more than 1,300 hours in space and spacewalking nine times.

The exhibit displaying a part of his donation to Purdue is located on the fourth floor of the Humanities, Social Science and Education Library inside the Stewart Center.

"It's a pleasure to be able to have the materials some place where they will be used by future generations," said Ross. He says he hopes his donations will allow younger generations to come and understand what he and his team did and to build upon that for future generations.

The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 22. A special open house for parents and children will also be held this Saturday afternoon from 1 until 3.
