LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The holiday came a little early for the Lafayette Salvation Army Red Kettle drive.

Major Jim Irvine said an anonymous person dropped $5,000 in a kettle Tuesday night.

The bell ringer at the location where the money turned up said she noticed a man having trouble getting the money in the kettle. She said she knew it would be a significant amount but wasn't aware it would be even close to $5,000.

When the crew was sorting out the money Tuesday night they were surprised to find 50 $100 bills.

"I thought it was just maybe $50, maybe $100," Salvation Army bell ringer Deb Myers said. "That's all I thought."

"This is the single, largest cash donation I've ever seen in the 20 years of doing bell ringing across the central United States and it's incredibly exciting to see," Salvation Army Major Jim Irvine said.

The Red Kettle campaign will last until 5 p.m. Christmas Eve.
