WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Temperatures reached upwards of 90 degrees on Saturday and humans were not the only ones that practiced caution in the heat; veterinarians urged pet owners to be aware of their animals' needs as well.

"This time of year, two big concerns: make sure that pets always have access to water so they can have plenty because that is how they cool, with water and with panting; and the other is that if anybody travels with animals in their vehicle they can not leave them unattended," said Dr. Cathy Alinovi, a practicing veterinarian.

Another concern for Dr. Alinovi are the 4-H fairs. She said that the 4-H participants are very cautious with the heat and their animals.

"During fair time this week it has been really hot. We've taken frozen water bottles, keep them at home in the freezer and stuff, so they got stuff to get up on and cool. Change out their water three or four times a day. Try to keep fans on them, get the air circulating so they stay cooler," said Lee Hall. Hall had animals that participated in the Benton county 4-H fair.

Dr. Alinovi said that there is one rule of thumb for those wondering if it is too hot to leave pets outside: "If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pet."

Alinovi said that an animal suffering from heat related illness will often times be unresponsive, listless, and may not even attempt to drink water.
