WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue University's Centennial Mall became the place for an informal debate about abortion Wednesday. Some argued the side of pro-abortion rights. Others took the opposite stance, and called themselves anti-abortion-rights believers.
All the debates were spurred by a display of graphic images of aborted fetuses. It's a display organized by Ohio-based anti-abortion group Created Equal and Purdue's Students for Life.
"We believe to end the injustice of abortion, America must see abortion," Created Equal Director of Training Seth Drayer said. "That is why we exist."
Whether people identified themselves as pro-abortion rights, or anti-abortion rights, all of them noticed the pictures.
"I feel like these images are really disturbing," Purdue student Haley Kissel said. "They should be a rude awakening to anyone."
"They obviously want me to change my opinion that abortion is wrong," Purdue student Alexander Sergiwa said. "As it currently stands, as I understand the law, abortion is not wrong in my opinion."
Created Equal hosts these events all year round on different college campuses. During election years they add an anti-abortion truck, which displays one of the graphic images on it.
"We're encouraging people to vote against abortion," Drayer said. "We don't endorse any candidate or party. We say if this really is an injustice you ought to use your vote to end it as well."
Whether or not the display changed anyone's opinion, those who joined the discussion said they're glad they did.
"I'm always glad to stop and speak to new people," Sergiwa said. "I wouldn't be introduced to new ideas or learn new things."
