WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Forty three thousand pounds of concrete, in a mixer, wound up in the middle of Kalberer Road Wednesday afternoon.
"The driver was moving off of Soldiers Home Road onto Kalberer," West Lafayette Police Officer Kevin Coomey, said.
Neighbors came outside to take pictures of the unusual scene. Also visiting the scene were the West Lafayette Engineering Department and Waste Water Management. Both responded to possible toxins making their way out of the truck.
"Once I arrived, and determined there was a large spill of antifreeze, hydraulic fluid and oil, we called our local fire department to keep it from going into the drain, which they did," Coomey said.
Firefighters say a person passing by stopped and put absorbent pads on the spill. The firefighters finished the rest. They said only a little bit got into the sewer drain.
"We put the oil dry on it, scooped it all up, and [Waste Water Management] will dispose of it properly," West Lafayette Firefighter Bruce Sigman said. "There are no public or environmental problems at all."
With so much construction already going on in the area, crews will spend the evening inspecting the road. West Lafayette Engineer, Dave Buck, predicts some lines may need to be repainted. And they will determine if the 43,000 pounds of concrete made a dent in the road.
