LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Miller Elementary began an eight step plan last November to help boost ISTEP scores and make Adequate Yearly Progress or AYP.

"Our teachers have fully implemented the model and at this point I see our instruction is focused on the standards we've designated," said Miller Elementary Principal Brandon Hawkins.

The plan includes talking with students before ISTEP tests about their previous scores and what goals they want to achieve, teaching material the ISTEP will test, assessing students comprehension of concepts and giving students tutorials or enrichment. Education consultant David Randall spent the last year working with Miller and says the eight step instructional model increases ISTEP scores 20 to 25 percent. He expects Miller Elementary to make AYP for 2009, something the school hasn't achieved in five years.

"We're hoping they can sustain that level with the resources and support. They will be able to do that," said Randall.

"I think we're definitely going to see some nice gains in our test scores," said Hawkins.

Test scores from Fall of 2008 and Spring of 2009 already show a significant rise because of the eight step plan.

Superintendent Ed Eiler said if Miller Elementary succeeds in making AYP for two years in a row with the eight step program, other schools in the district might also begin using the plan.
