WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The poinsettia plant is known for its classic red shade; that's one reason why it's a holiday season favorite.

Horticulture professors at Purdue University are searching for the public's opinion on different shades of the plant.

Assistant Professor Roberto Lopez said there are 93 different types of Poinsettia plants in their green house. Lopez said previously this type of poinsettia open house event was only for professional plant breeders. Now, he said breeders want opinions directly from consumers.

Participants that come to the open house are asked to fill out individual surveys. Each survey requires a ranking for the best red, pink, and white poinsettia plant.

"Last year, the response was overwhelming. We had over 250 people attend. Today we've been at the green house a little over 2 hours and we've had more than 250 people show up. The public really enjoys this," said Lopez.

According to last year's survey plant colors like "Ice Punch" and "Mars Red" drew a lot of attention. He said 80% of sales are still for the classic red plant.
