WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Drivers who use Cumberland Avenue in West Lafayette may need to find another route. As of March First, Cumberland Avenue from U.S. 52 to the Salem Courthouse apartment complex will be closed for construction. City Engineer Dave Buck said signs will direct drivers drive down either Yeager Road or Win Hentschel Boulevard instead. Buck said this is the first segment of the Cumberland Avenue Reconstruction Project. During construction, crews will install the city's first official roundabout. Roads and sidewalks will also be improved.

"This closure allows us to do everything kind of at once rather than having to stand on one foot and maintain traffic either one-way or two-way through the construction zone and it will be safer for the workers and ultimately safer for the traveling public," Buck said.

Construction on Cumberland Avenue from Salem Courthouse to Yeager Road will begin in June. Buck said Phase One of the project should be wrapped up by October 2010.
