Pumpkins popping up around the area

Local family farm selling pumpkins for 20 years

BROOKSTON, Ind. (WLFI) - Bright orange or white, gigantic or miniature, perfectly round or strangely misshapen, nothing says fall quite like pumpkins.

One White County family has been growing all the fall favorites for nearly two decades.

"It's just beautiful out here. We have three sons who are very, very involved in this and have to do most of the picking," Nina Kent said.

Whether it's pumpkins, gourds, or squash, the Kents devote September and October to growing and selling these cucurbits.

"A cucurbit is anything that grows on the ground, on the vine," Kent said.

Heavy rains caused a nationwide shortage of pumpkins last year, but Kent said they weren't affected. However it did delay planting this year.

"We had a little over 12 inches of rain and we were actually two weeks late in planting so we have a lot of pumpkins that are still kind of turning orange," she said.

But there are still plenty of pumpkins for the picking. Kent said on any given weekend, their farm is packed with families grabbing their favorite pumpkin and going through the corn maze. And, she loves it when they come back year after year.
