'10-20 years of work in just 3' in Delphi

DELPHI, Ind. (WLFI) - An open house in Delphi gives residents a glimpse into the city's near future.

Back in May, Delphi was chosen as a "Stellar Community", bringing millions of dollars in state and federal funding for revitalization.

Delphi's mayor and engineers were available to show residents Tuesday evening what some of the projects will look like, including facade restorations, housing improvements and the restoration of the opera house.

Project manager Cory Whitesell with HWC Engineering said crews will be doing 10 to 20 years worth of work in three.

"This will radically transform the appearance of the downtown and you will start to see more investment," said Whitesell.  "Not just by the city, but by private individuals."

"When the Hoosier Heartland comes through and the opportunities that are provided by the Hoosier Heartland for economic development, we can combine that with the other quality of life issues or aspects that we have here in the community and we can grow the community," said Delphi Mayor Randy Strasser.

As part of the agreement, the city of Delphi and the Delphi Preservation Society will contribute $3.3 million.  The total amount of funding the city will get is still unknown.

Construction is likely to begin next spring.
