EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Whirlpool will soon begin laying off workers as it prepares to close its Evansville product development center.
The Evansville Courier-Press reports the company alerted the state in a Sept. 19 letter that it would begin laying off workers "on or about Nov. 23." Whirlpool announced last month it was closing its Evansville center and moving the work to Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Mich.
About 220 people, including engineers and product developers, work at the Evansville plant.
A Whirlpool spokeswoman told the newspaper last month that the company would try to relocate as many of the workers as possible to Michigan, but added that 30 percent of them were eligible for retirement beginning in 2014.
