Warheads dismantled under Lugar tops 7,600

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar is touting the latest number of nuclear warheads and missiles dismantled via his landmark 1991 program designed to capture so-called "loose nukes" in the former Soviet Union.

Lugar said Tuesday that the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks should be a reminder that weapons of mass destruction are still the top national security threat the U.S. faces.

Lugar and former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn created the disarmament program in 1991. Lugar's office says the program has accounted for the dismantling of more than 7,600 nuclear warheads, 900 intercontinental ballistic missiles, 500 ICBM silos and hundreds of other pieces of equipment used to launch nuclear weapons.
