ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Officials in an affluent suburb north of Indianapolis may finally be willing to let Wal-Mart Stores Inc. build a store in their town.

Zionsville planning officials have rejected the discount giant's efforts for six years amid court battles and protests by residents who say a Wal-Mart store would spoil the community's charm.

Town Council President Tim Haak tells The Indianapolis Star the company's latest design is half as large and more aesthetically appealing. The proposed building is mostly brick with picturesque landscaping.

Wal-Mart needs approval for a zoning variance because the building still is larger than the town ordinance allows.

The Zionsville Plan Commission will consider the proposal Oct. 15.

An attorney for Wal-Mart declined comment, but confirmed the company is trying again to build in Zionsville.
