Program gets $639K to house homeless veterans

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Department of Veterans Affairs is providing a $639,000 grant to an Indianapolis program to house homeless military veterans.

The federal agency said Wednesday that the grant to HealthNet Inc. will provide a daily average of 15 beds for homeless veterans at apartments in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis project is one of 38 around the country that will provide temporary housing to formerly homeless veterans with the goal that they will keep the residence as their own.

The grant was awarded through a program that gives veterans the opportunity to take over payment of a lease instead of moving out after leaving certain VA programs, such as mental health services or job training. Usually, VA programs require veterans living in transitional housing to move out after 24 months.
