Police end stand-off in Darlington, 2 taken into custody

DARLINGTON, Ind. (WLFI) - Yellow crime scene tape shut down Darlington's Main Street for hours Monday.  The S.W.A.T. team in full gear didn't walk out until after 5:00 p.m.

The stand-off began hours earlier.  While trying to get the electricity shut off at a house on 100 block of North Franklin Street, Darlington Deputy Marshal David Long spotted the residents, 48-year-old Raymond "Troy" Barnes and his wife, 47-year-old Rosana Barnes run inside.  Both are wanted by the Montgomery County Sheriff's office and so Long asked for help from deputies.

"Most times when we attempt to arrest him, he runs, he resists," said Sheriff Casteel.  "So the (S.W.A.T.) team was called to make the arrest."

Officers put a perimeter around the home and got a search warrant, but Barnes refused all their attempts to make contact.  Eventually, Barnes called a relative who came to the scene and then later surrendered to the S.W.A.T. members.

"We had received information in the past that there was a possibility that Mr. Barnes would have his home booby-trapped, that he wasn't going to go peacefully," said Sheriff Casteel.  "So we weren't taking any chances."

Barnes told officers his wife had left the home and if they tried to go in, they would be bitten by his dogs.

Deputies said a hostage negotiator kept trying to call her, but they got no response.  Investigators said they had no choice but to kill three dogs as they forced their way in.

"The dogs were aggressive and came at our S.W.A.T. team officers, so they were destroyed," said Sheriff Casteel.

Officers said they found Rosana Barnes hiding in the attic.  Officers also found firearms and ammunition inside, but no booby traps.

"It's scary," said Sheriff Casteel. "You have to plan.  You have to think these things out ahead of time and plan for the worst.  It's nothing that anyone wants to do but we have great guys that were willing to do it. Thank goodness, it worked out tonight."

Raymond "Troy" Barnes was wanted on a theft warrant, as well as resisting law enforcement and reckless driving.

Rosana Barnes was wanted on a failure to appear warrant related to charges of driving wile suspended and possession of paraphernalia.

They are both in the Montgomery County jail with no bond set.
